The Challenge
With play spread across miles of championship course, it's impossible to follow every player and every decisive moment.
NTT DATA wanted to transform the fan experience at The 152nd Open Championship by creating a destination where visitors could stay connected to the tournament without missing the action. The experience needed to present complex live data in a way that was engaging, intuitive and visually compelling, while operating reliably throughout four days of live competition.
Golf Course Digital Twin

The Solution
We created a digital twin of Royal Troon Golf Club and injected it with live data
Built from high-resolution drone scans with sub-5 cm accuracy, the real-time digital twin recreated Royal Troon in exceptional detail. Live tournament data powered immersive visualisations, from shot tracking and player comparisons to green analysis and cinematic flythroughs. Over four days, the experience engaged more than 150,000 spectators, bringing fans closer to the action than ever before.
Head-to-head infographic

Transforming Data
Every visualisation was designed to make professional golf easier to understand and more exciting to follow.
ShotView mapped every stroke on each hole, allowing fans to understand exactly how a player progressed from tee to cup through an intuitive visual replay. Head-to-Head comparisons brought live player statistics together in a clear side-by-side format, making it easy to compare performance metrics, leaderboard positions and tournament progress.

Transforming Data
Our visualizations became instant fan-favourites
LiveView recreated every shot in real time, synchronised with the live broadcast. Spectators could watch the ball's trajectory across the digital twin while viewing key information including player name, shot count, and distance to the pin. PuttView revealed the hidden complexity of the greens using an elevation heat map, helping spectators see how subtle changes in terrain influence the movement of the ball. It quickly became one of the most popular experiences on the DataWall.
Longest drive infographic

Transforming Data
Live weather, time-of-day and data driven
Longest Drive celebrated the tournament's biggest moments by visualising record-breaking drives alongside key statistics, while also displaying average landing zones to provide tactical insight into each hole. To complete the experience, a continuously updated cinematic flythrough of all 18 holes showcased Royal Troon in real time, matching the live weather conditions and time of day to create an authentic digital representation of the championship venue.
